CMV IgM antibodies typically appear within 1-2 weeks of acute infection and persist for several months. Their presence supports a diagnosis of recent or active CMV infection, though false positives can occur with cross-reactivity to other viruses and reactivation.
This test is used to evaluate patients with mononucleosis-like illness (negative monospot), unexplained fever or hepatitis, and to investigate possible congenital CMV in pregnancy. Results are interpreted alongside IgG testing, and confirmation may require PCR or other follow-up testing. Sample type is serum.
