Repeat or additional wound cultures are sometimes needed when wounds persist despite treatment, when bacterial populations may shift on therapy, or when multiple wound sites need separate assessment. The second specimen is processed in the same way as the initial culture, with results compared to the original.
This testing is used in management of chronic or refractory wounds, evaluation of resistant or persistent infections, and when wound sites with potentially different microbiology require separate analysis. Sample type is a wound swab, tissue, or aspirate from the relevant site.
