Wound cultures grow and identify the bacteria contributing to a wound infection, then perform susceptibility testing on significant pathogens. Many wounds contain multiple organisms, including some that may simply be skin flora rather than active pathogens, so interpretation considers clinical context.
This test is used for non-healing wounds, surgical site infections, diabetic foot ulcers, pressure injuries, abscesses, and bite wounds. Aerobic and anaerobic cultures together provide the most complete picture, especially in deep wounds. Sample type is a wound swab, tissue, or aspirate from beneath any surface debris.
