CULTURE, URINE

Urine culture grows and identifies bacteria from a urine specimen, then performs antibiotic susceptibility testing on significant isolates. Bacterial counts are reported to help distinguish true infection from contamination, with thresholds varying by clinical context.

This test is ordered to confirm and characterize urinary tract infections, evaluate recurrent or complicated UTIs, identify causative organisms in pregnancy or pre-procedural urinary screening, and guide antibiotic therapy when empiric treatment fails. Proper collection — typically a clean-catch midstream sample — is essential to minimize contamination. Sample type is a clean-catch urine specimen.
