Cultures from these sites focus on identifying significant pathogens above and beyond what is normally expected to be present, requiring careful interpretation of mixed bacterial growth.
This test is ordered for wounds, mucosal sites, abscesses near body surfaces, and other infections where the specimen unavoidably includes normal flora. Findings are reported in the context of typical flora at each site, with susceptibility testing performed on organisms judged to be clinically significant. Sample type depends on the infection site.
