CREATININE, SERUM

Creatinine is produced at a relatively steady rate proportional to muscle mass and is filtered out of the blood by the kidneys. Elevated creatinine indicates that the kidneys are not filtering effectively and is a key marker of acute or chronic kidney disease.

This test is part of routine metabolic panels and kidney function panels and is used to estimate glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), the best measure of overall kidney function. It is essential before procedures using contrast dye, in patients on potentially nephrotoxic medications, and for monitoring chronic kidney disease, diabetes, and hypertension. Sample type is serum.
