CREATINE KINASE (CK), MB

CK-MB is the isoenzyme of creatine kinase found mainly in cardiac muscle, with smaller amounts in skeletal muscle. CK-MB rises within hours of cardiac injury and falls back to normal within 1-3 days, making it useful for detecting reinfarction in patients whose troponin remains elevated from a recent event.

This test is used to evaluate possible reinfarction after recent heart attack (when troponin is still elevated), and in selected cardiac monitoring situations. For initial diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome, troponin is now the standard test. Sample type is serum.
