CREATINE KINASE (CK)

CK is concentrated in muscle tissue and rises when muscle cells are damaged. Sources include strenuous exercise, traumatic injury, inflammatory muscle diseases, statin-related muscle toxicity, certain inherited myopathies, and historically, heart attacks (though troponin is now preferred for cardiac assessment).

This test is used to evaluate muscle pain or weakness, monitor patients on statins or other potentially muscle-toxic drugs, work up unexplained muscle disease, and follow rhabdomyolysis. Markedly elevated CK with muscle breakdown raises concern for acute kidney injury. Sample type is serum.
