The CBC measures the number, size, and types of cells in the blood. The differential breaks white blood cells into their five main types — neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils — each of which can shift in characteristic patterns during infection, allergy, inflammation, or hematologic disease.
This test is used for routine screening, evaluation of fatigue or infection, pre-operative workup, and monitoring of chemotherapy and other treatments. Abnormalities can guide further hematologic investigation or trigger reflex testing such as peripheral smear review. Sample type is whole blood in an EDTA tube.
