The CMP expands on the Basic Metabolic Panel by adding six liver- and protein-related tests: total protein, albumin, alkaline phosphatase, ALT, AST, and bilirubin. Together with glucose, calcium, electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride, CO2), BUN, and creatinine, it provides a thorough metabolic assessment.
This panel is ordered as part of routine physicals, to evaluate symptoms such as fatigue or weight changes, to assess organ function before prescribing medications, and to monitor chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, liver disease, and kidney disease. Patients are usually asked to fast for 8-12 hours before testing for accurate glucose results.
