Total cholesterol and HDL together provide a useful estimate of cardiovascular risk. HDL — often called 'good' cholesterol — helps remove other cholesterol from the bloodstream, and higher levels are protective against heart disease. The ratio of total cholesterol to HDL is sometimes used to refine risk estimation.
This test is used for routine cardiovascular screening, particularly in non-fasting samples where a full lipid panel may be less accurate, and as an alternative to the full lipid panel in some screening programs. It is less detailed than the full lipid panel, which adds LDL and triglycerides. Sample type is serum.
