CHLORIDE, URINE

Urinary chloride helps distinguish between different causes of metabolic alkalosis: low urine chloride suggests vomiting or diuretic use that has worn off, while high urine chloride suggests active diuretic use or certain inherited tubular disorders. Urine chloride is also used to evaluate volume status and hyponatremia.

This test is ordered in evaluation of metabolic acid-base disorders, unexplained electrolyte abnormalities, hyponatremia workup, and suspected diuretic abuse. Sample type is a random or 24-hour urine collection depending on the clinical question.
