C-REACTIVE PROTEIN, CARDIAC

C-reactive protein is a protein produced by the liver that rises in response to inflammation. The high-sensitivity (hs-CRP) version of the test detects very low concentrations — far below those used to monitor active infection or autoimmune disease — making it useful for cardiovascular risk stratification.

This test is typically ordered alongside a lipid panel in apparently healthy adults to refine assessment of heart disease risk. Results are generally interpreted in three tiers: low (under 1 mg/L), average (1-3 mg/L), and high (over 3 mg/L). It is most useful for patients with intermediate cardiovascular risk where additional information may guide preventive treatment decisions. Sample type is serum.
