C-PEPTIDE

When the pancreas produces insulin, it also releases an equal amount of C-peptide. Because injected insulin does not contain C-peptide, this test specifically reflects how much insulin the body itself is making. This distinction is valuable in diabetes care and in investigating low blood sugar.

This test is used to distinguish between type 1 and type 2 diabetes, evaluate residual pancreatic function in established diabetes, investigate hypoglycemia (especially possible insulinoma or surreptitious insulin use), and assess candidacy for certain therapies. Results are best interpreted alongside simultaneous glucose levels. Sample type is serum.
