Clostridioides difficile produces toxins that cause inflammation of the colon, especially after antibiotic use disrupts normal gut bacteria. PCR testing detects the toxin gene in stool, providing rapid and highly sensitive identification of infection.
This test is ordered for patients with significant diarrhea, particularly with recent antibiotic exposure, hospitalization, or immunocompromise. It is typically restricted to patients with unformed stool (loose or watery), as asymptomatic colonization is common and testing in those without symptoms can lead to overtreatment. Sample type is unformed stool.
