Urea is produced in the liver as a byproduct of protein metabolism and excreted by the kidneys. Elevated BUN can indicate reduced kidney function, dehydration, high protein intake, gastrointestinal bleeding, or heart failure, while low BUN may occur in severe liver disease, malnutrition, or overhydration.
This test is part of the basic and comprehensive metabolic panels and is interpreted alongside creatinine. The BUN-to-creatinine ratio helps distinguish between dehydration, kidney disease, and gastrointestinal bleeding as causes of elevated BUN. It is also used to monitor patients on dialysis, diuretics, and medications affecting kidney function. Sample type is serum.
