BLOOD FILM FOR REVIEW

When automated blood count results suggest abnormalities — unusual cell types, very high or low counts, or flagged results — a manual blood film review provides detailed examination of cell morphology under the microscope. Reviewers assess red cell shape and size, identify abnormal white cells, count platelets, and look for parasites, malignant cells, and other findings invisible to automated analyzers.

This test is used as a follow-up to abnormal automated CBCs, in evaluation of unexplained anemia or cytopenia, suspected leukemia or lymphoma, parasitic infection workup, and specific findings such as schistocytes (suggesting hemolytic anemia). Sample type is whole blood in an EDTA tube.
