BLOOD CULTURE, ROUTINE

Blood culture involves drawing blood into special bottles that support microbial growth, then incubating them and identifying any organisms that grow. Multiple sets, drawn from different sites, are typically collected to improve sensitivity and help distinguish true infections from skin contamination.

This test is essential when sepsis is suspected, in evaluation of unexplained fever, in patients with possible endocarditis, and before starting antibiotics in seriously ill patients. Identifying the responsible organism and its antibiotic susceptibility profile is critical for selecting effective treatment. Sample type is blood collected in aerobic and anaerobic culture bottles.
