SHV beta-lactamases are common in Klebsiella pneumoniae and other Enterobacterales. While narrow-spectrum SHV variants confer resistance to penicillins, ESBL forms also resist cephalosporins, making infections more difficult to treat.
Detection of blaSHV is part of comprehensive molecular susceptibility testing in serious gram-negative infections. Identifying SHV-producing organisms — particularly ESBL variants — guides selection of carbapenems or other effective antibiotics and supports infection control. Sample type is typically a culture isolate or direct specimen.
