OXA is a large and diverse family of beta-lactamases. Some variants (such as OXA-48 and related enzymes) function as carbapenemases and are particularly important in Klebsiella pneumoniae and other Enterobacterales. Others extend the spectrum of resistance to cephalosporins.
Detection of blaOXA in molecular testing helps characterize resistance mechanisms in gram-negative infections and guides selection of effective antibiotics. Sample type is typically a culture isolate or direct specimen.
