Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is produced by the developing placenta after embryo implantation. The qualitative serum test detects whether hCG is present above a clinically significant threshold and is more sensitive than urine pregnancy testing, detecting pregnancy earlier and more reliably.
This test is used to definitively confirm or rule out pregnancy when a clear answer is needed quickly — such as before procedures, imaging studies, or starting medications that could affect a fetus. If tracking pregnancy progress is needed, a quantitative hCG (with a specific numerical value) is preferred. Sample type is serum.
