The BMP measures eight key analytes: glucose, calcium, sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate (CO2), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and creatinine. Together these values provide critical information about kidney function, electrolyte balance, acid-base status, and glucose metabolism.
Clinicians order the BMP as part of routine health checks, hospital admissions, emergency evaluations, and ongoing monitoring of chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and kidney disease. It is also used to monitor patients taking medications that can affect kidney function or electrolytes. The sample is serum or plasma; fasting may be required if accurate glucose measurement is needed.
