Vitamin B12 and folate work closely together in cell division and red blood cell production. Deficiencies of either can cause megaloblastic anemia, and B12 deficiency can also cause neuropathy, balance problems, and cognitive symptoms.
This combined test is used to evaluate macrocytic anemia, investigate unexplained fatigue or neuropathy, screen older adults or patients with malabsorption, and monitor patients on medications that can lower B12 absorption (such as metformin or acid-suppressing drugs). Strict vegetarians and vegans are also at higher risk for B12 deficiency. Sample type is serum.
