Aspergillus fumigatus is a common environmental mold that can trigger allergic responses in sensitized individuals. IgE antibodies indicate allergic sensitization and are characteristically elevated in allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA), a hypersensitivity reaction seen mainly in patients with asthma or cystic fibrosis.
This test is ordered to investigate suspected mold allergy, evaluate poorly controlled asthma, and work up possible ABPA, which often presents with worsening asthma, brown mucus plugs, and elevated total IgE. Results are interpreted alongside total IgE, eosinophil counts, and Aspergillus IgG. Sample type is serum.
