Every atherogenic particle — LDL, VLDL, IDL, and lipoprotein(a) — contains a single ApoB molecule, so ApoB reflects the total number of atherogenic particles in the blood. In patients with metabolic syndrome, diabetes, or high triglycerides, ApoB can be a more accurate predictor of cardiovascular risk than LDL cholesterol alone.
This test is used to refine cardiovascular risk assessment, monitor patients on cholesterol-lowering therapy, and evaluate inherited lipid disorders such as familial hypercholesterolemia. It is most useful when LDL and triglyceride values give discordant or borderline messages. Sample type is serum.
