This test detects antibodies against red blood cell antigens other than ABO. If unexpected antibodies are present, they could destroy transfused red cells or, in pregnancy, cross the placenta and affect the fetus. Identifying these antibodies allows providers to select compatible blood and take preventive measures during pregnancy.
This test is performed routinely before blood transfusion, at the first prenatal visit, and again later in pregnancy in Rh-negative mothers. Positive screens are followed up with antibody identification to determine the specific antibody and its clinical significance. Sample type is whole blood in an EDTA tube.
