DNase B is one of the enzymes produced by Group A Streptococcus, and the body makes antibodies against it after infection. Anti-DNase B antibodies rise more slowly than ASO antibodies but remain elevated longer, making them useful for diagnosing recent strep infections, especially skin infections where ASO may not rise as reliably.
This test is ordered when post-streptococcal complications are suspected — particularly acute rheumatic fever, post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis, or PANDAS syndrome — even when the original infection was not documented. It is often tested alongside ASO for improved sensitivity. Sample type is serum.
