The amylase test measures the level of amylase enzyme in the blood. The pancreas releases amylase into the digestive tract to help break down starches, and small amounts circulate in the bloodstream under normal conditions.
Elevated amylase is a hallmark of acute pancreatitis but may also occur in chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, salivary gland disorders, intestinal obstruction, and certain ectopic pregnancies. The test is often ordered alongside lipase, which is more specific to the pancreas. Sample type is serum; patients may be asked to fast briefly before the test.
