Aldosterone acts on the kidneys to retain sodium and water and excrete potassium, playing a central role in regulating blood pressure and fluid balance. Abnormal levels can cause hypertension, low potassium, and metabolic disturbances.
This test is used to evaluate suspected primary hyperaldosteronism (Conn syndrome), which often presents as resistant hypertension with low potassium; investigate adrenal insufficiency; and work up unexplained hypokalemia. Aldosterone is typically interpreted alongside plasma renin activity, as the ratio between them helps distinguish between different causes of hormonal hypertension. Posture, salt intake, and medications affect results, so preparation instructions should be followed carefully. Sample type is serum.
