ALBUMIN/CREATININE RATIO

Healthy kidneys retain albumin in the blood and excrete only minimal amounts in urine. Even small amounts of albumin in urine — too low to be detected by standard dipstick — can be an early sign of kidney damage, especially in people with diabetes or high blood pressure. Comparing albumin to creatinine corrects for urine concentration on a random sample.

This test is recommended annually for patients with diabetes and is also used to screen for chronic kidney disease in hypertension, monitor known kidney disease, and detect kidney involvement in conditions like preeclampsia. Persistently elevated results warrant further evaluation and may guide treatments aimed at protecting kidney function. Sample type is a random (spot) urine collection.
