This combined test screens for the three most clinically significant hepatitis viruses by detecting specific antibodies and antigens linked to acute infection: IgM antibody to hepatitis A, surface antigen and IgM core antibody to hepatitis B, and antibody to hepatitis C.
It is ordered for patients presenting with jaundice, dark urine, fatigue, or unexplained elevations in liver enzymes; following needle-stick injuries or other potential exposures; and in pre-transplant or pre-procedural assessments. Results guide treatment, contact tracing, and decisions about isolation or post-exposure prophylaxis. Sample type is serum.
