ACTIVATED PARTIAL THROMBOPLASTIN TIME (APTT)

APTT measures the time required for clot formation when certain coagulation factors are activated, assessing the intrinsic and common pathways of the coagulation cascade. A prolonged APTT can indicate clotting factor deficiencies, the presence of inhibitors (such as lupus anticoagulant), or anticoagulant therapy.

This test is most commonly used to monitor patients on unfractionated heparin (target ranges depend on the indication), evaluate unexplained bleeding or bruising, screen for hemophilia and von Willebrand disease, work up suspected lupus anticoagulant, and assess preoperative bleeding risk. Sample type is whole blood in a sodium citrate (light blue) tube.
