F-actin antibodies (anti-smooth muscle antibodies directed specifically at actin) are a key marker for autoimmune hepatitis type 1 and are more specific than non-specific smooth muscle antibodies. They appear in the majority of patients with this condition.
This test is ordered to evaluate patients with elevated liver enzymes of unclear cause, especially when viral hepatitis, alcohol, and medication-related injury have been excluded. It is typically tested alongside ANA, immunoglobulin G levels, and other autoimmune liver markers. Sample type is serum.
