ABO AND RH TYPE

ABO blood typing identifies which of the four major blood groups a person has based on the A and B antigens present on red blood cells. Rh typing detects the presence or absence of the D antigen. Both must be matched between donor and recipient before transfusion, and Rh-negative status during pregnancy may require additional management to prevent hemolytic disease of the newborn.

This test is performed before any blood transfusion, during prenatal care, before certain procedures, and as part of blood donor screening. Sample type is whole blood in an EDTA tube.
