6-MAM is a metabolite produced specifically when the body breaks down heroin. Unlike morphine and codeine, which can come from prescription opioids or poppy seeds, 6-MAM detection is essentially specific for heroin use. However, 6-MAM has a very short half-life — typically detectable in urine for only 8-24 hours after use — so its absence does not rule out heroin use.
This test is used to distinguish heroin from prescription opioid use, support clinical assessment in addiction medicine, and provide medico-legal documentation. Sample type is urine.
