Vitamin D circulates in two main forms: D3 (cholecalciferol), produced in the skin from sunlight or obtained from animal sources and supplements, and D2 (ergocalciferol), found in some plant-derived foods and prescription supplements. LC/MS-MS can measure each form separately, providing more detail than total 25-hydroxy vitamin D alone.
This test is used to assess vitamin D status with maximum accuracy, monitor patients on prescription D2 supplementation, and resolve discrepancies seen with immunoassay testing. Sample type is serum.
